It just means that your going to make your site easy for the search engines to find and index.   A big part of it is just having a lot of good solid content and then knowing what your main keywords are that people are searching on and creating the content around those keywords.  The bottom line is that when you have a good website that is fully optimized, usually you have a steady flow of traffic from potential clients who will find your site when searching for what you do.  They will never find you if your site isn't setup right and not coming up in the search engine listings top 10. We have helped many lawyers optimize their websites and achieve top rankings at the search engines.  We have most recently helped the houston divorce lawyers at the law offices of Dennis Slate get their legal website optimized.  The site had zero presence at the search engines but after only one week, its already coming up for a # of terms in the top 10 at Google. Most law firms never take the time to optimize their websites, not even for partner names.  Yet it can be a good idea to organize your content and optimize the pages for keywords related to what you do, its pretty simple really.   The results can be awesome and getting new clients from the Internet is a really great thing! Search Queries Are Getting Longer: Hitwise Report

More than half of all search queries are at least three words long, and more than a third are four words or longer. That’s according to Hitwise data (PDF) released today:   As the chart shows, 1- and 2-word queries are becoming less common, while 4-, 5-, and all the way up to 8+ word queries are becoming more common. The numbers are very similar to what Hitwise shared at SMX West a couple weeks ago. The takeaway point here is that the so-called long tail of search continues to get longer. As searchers get more sophisticated in how they use Google, Yahoo, Live Search, etc., it opens up more opportunities for webmasters and marketers to create content and/or ads that captures these longer search queries. Also in the same Hitwise announcement: Google’s search share held steady at 72% in January. Yahoo also held steady at 17.8%. MSN/Live Search saw a slight drop from the month before, while Ask saw a slight increase. source This makes a lot of sense and is exactly what I am seeing in my legal site stat reports. Thats why its key to not focus that much on one single keyword or keyphrase, especially if it has a lot of competition. Your better off building new pages and content around a variety of keywords that you discover doing keyword research, in order to capture the most long tail keyword searches.  This is confusing and that's why your best off to just hire me!

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING FOR LAWYERS

Social media marketing is the process of promoting your site or business through social media channels. Which can be a powerful strategy that can get you links that can increase your organic search engine rankings and potential traffic to your legal web site. Social media marketing for lawyers will only work if you have some kind of useful content and also the time it takes for the "social" part of social media marketing!  If you have good articles that have useful and interesting information, then it is a good idea to promote it via the social media websites. Developing articles and successfully getting them popular on various social media websites like Digg and StumbleUpon will lead to multiple benefits for any website: ·         Primary and Secondary Traffic. Primary traffic is the number of visitors who come directly from social media websites after reading your article. Secondary traffic is referral traffic from websites which link to and send you visitors, after they come across your content through the social sites. ·         High Quality Links. Becoming popular on social news websites like Digg or Reddit will get you a large number of links, some of which may be topically relevant, some not. A good story can realistically acquire a large number of high quality editorial links, most of which cannot be easily bought. Now let’s translate this into tangible benefits for your legal website: 1. Links = Better Search Engine Rankings. When a website receives a large number of natural, permanent links from trusted domains, it develops authority. Search engines trust it. A new website may find it difficult to gain links from a critical mass that is not familiar with it but a trusted social news resource makes it easier for links to come in, because the community and buzz has somewhat ‘certified‘ the value of the site. 2. Primary & Secondary Traffic   General sites or blogs in the same niche will link to a story that’s popular on social sites, because it adds value for their readers or users. This is done naturally on a daily basis for many.  So this is valuable for getting a link but also the visitors that come from those links to your website, will probably be interested in your service. What Makes Social Media Marketing so Important? Social Media connects people through technology, affordably, and comfortably. When people connect, information gets shared! If you have a practice area or legal service you are promoting, you really can’t afford to ignore the potential of social media marketing. Most people think of social networks like Facebook and MySpace and have no idea that they can be used to promote a business or a product. Absolut Vodka has a page called Top Bartender on Facebook. Acura has a fan club, Acura TSX Connect, as well.  If the big companies see the benefit of using social networks, you should, too. Facebook and MySpace aren’t the only social networks. Do you want to connect with the business community? LinkedIn is the site for you. It is the perfect place to promote services and products that meet the needs of business. Would you like to integrate video, pictures, and blog? Then Bebo is a top competitor. All these social internet communities can be tapped to market services and products. Some sites give you exposure because people collaborate on them. The most famous, always at the top of the search engines, is Wikipedia. You may be less familiar with social bookmarking. Delicious and StumbleUpon are the most popular. These bookmarking sites let members store and organize bookmarks to their favorite sites in categories that they choose. These bookmarks can be kept private or made public. Members can give feedback on the sites, too. How do you make social media marketing work? The first thing is to let people know who you are. On Facebook use your profile to say who you are, what you do, and where you are. On a blog, your about us pages tell the story and your posts provide unique content that can then be distributed via social media sites. The main thing is that you have to create good solid content on a regular basis because it can then be used to get more people to your website and as a bonus you can usually get a number of high quality back links pointing to your site, that you normally would have never gotten and this increased link exposure usually will lead to higher organic search engine rankings. Social media marketing offers a number of low-cost ways to promote your legal services. Create a blog, post video clips on YouTube, create articles and submit them to Digg and Reddit and start building your site up through social bookmarking. Social media marketing is becoming very popular and is something that should be part of your overall Internet marketing plan.  Now is the time to start utilizing social media marketing in order to promote your law firm. Social Media Marketing – DIGG For Lawyers

Digg is a website made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, by submitting links and stories, and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories. Voting stories up and down is the site's cornerstone function, respectively called digging and burying. Many stories get submitted every day, but only the most Dugg stories appear on the front page. Digg's popularity has prompted the creation of other social networking sites with story submission and voting systems. Digg has grown large enough that submissions sometimes create a sudden increase of traffic to the "dugg" website. This is referred to by some Digg users as the "Digg effect" and by some others as the site being "dugg to death". However, in many cases stories are linked simultaneously on several popular bookmarking sites. In such cases, the impact of the "digg effect" is difficult to isolate and assess. WordPress is especially known for its tendency to crash under the increased traffic.[4] On August 27, 2007, Digg altered its main interface, mostly in the profile area. The domain digg.com attracted at least 236 million visitors annually by 2008 according to a Compete.com survey. DIGG is pretty important because its a great way to submit your article or blog post and have other users DIGG it, or vote in favor of it. If enough people digg your submission, it can goto the frontpage of Digg, which means a lot of traffic to your site.  It also can mean links from other sites, which is always a good thing. DIGG is one of many social media marketing type sites,  Its going to be more important to utilize these sites, they can have a powerful effect if you have good content and build a good network of fellow diggers. Digging takes time and the jury is out on how valuable it is, but I would say its a very good idea for your law firm to establish some kind of digg account and use it to promote you articles and blog posts. Its another tool to utilize and part of the overall Internet Marketing for Lawyer strategy.  My DIGG account name is A21Lawyer and my profile is here Check out DIGG, its a great place to track the latest news and to also promote your content.

Google Adwords For Lawyers

What is Google AdWords? This is Googles pay per click program. If you type in a search term like "Chicago Lawyers" and click search, two types of search results come up: on the left and below the search box are the organic search results that are also known as natural or free results and on the right side of your browser screen, and sometimes above the organic results, are the Sponsored Links. An advertiser only pays Google for the times when someone actually clicks on the ad and goes through to the advertiser's website. Thus the term, "Pay Per Click". BIDDING MORE IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER The higher the advertiser bids on a keyword combined with the users Google quality score will determine how high the ad ranks. So it's not always a matter of bidding the highest amount, your campaigns have to be optimized so that they produce a high CTR – click through rate. So this basically means you should create a number of different campaigns and ad groups and focus the ads on the keywords your bidding on.  If you only create one campaign and one adgroup and have like 50 keywords, your ads wont match up to the keywords your bidding on, so your quality score will be low and your ads wont show up as much, your won't get a high CTR and you will wind up paying more per click. Sometimes its a good idea to lower your Cost Per Click (CPC) and instead of being #1 for $2.50 a click, you can be #4 for only 50 cents a click. It takes some tweaking and experimenting with different strategies but the goal is to drive as much focused and qualified traffic to your site for the best possible value. There is no doubt that Internet marketing and pay per click marketing work, if you setup a Google adwords campaign and focus on the keywords related to your firms practice and have a professional monitor and maintain the account, theres a really good chance thaty ou will get a lot of traffic to your site of people looking for your firms speciality. Marketing is more important than ever 94% of CMOs believe that "a tough economic period is precisely the time when marketing plays a key role." Law Firms Finding Success With SEO

FROM LAWYER CASTING: Alyn-Weiss & Associates has just released a study showing that 59% of law firms have used SEO over the past 24 months(up from 20% in the prior 2 year period). And 20% of firms said they got new business from SEO in 2007-2008 (up from 8% in the prior 1 year period). The average size of firm in the study was 46 lawyers. I'd venture that the 80% of the firms who feel they didn't get new business from their SEO efforts weren't properly tracking traffic and conversions, didn't do the SEO right, or did a poor job of closing leads. Basically, it's somewhat difficult not to get new business (or least get new leads) over time when SEO is done right.  I would agree here that the firms that say they didnt get new clients with SEO, either didnt really do SEO or more then likely didnt track where the new clients came from.   Every lawyer that we have helped with SEO or PPC has gotten new clients as a result.  Josh is correct in that if the SEO is done right, its almost impossible not to get new clents!  Source

Updated Legal Design & SEO = Top Google Results = New Clients

I blogged a couple weeks back about the first updated site we launchedfor Tax Attorney Ken Sheppard and I said I would be blogging soon about the Top Google Search rankings the site was going to soon have.  I didnt think it would be this soon! Sometimes you have to start over with a site to get the best possible results at the search engines.  In this case we moved the site to a new webhost, created a search engine friendly design with an additional 15 pages of optimized content and fully optimized the site for the search engines.  Just two weeks ago the site could not be found for any keywords, now the site is #1 for Ohio Tax Lawyer, #1 for Ohio Tax Attorney and its basically in the top 10 for all keywords related to Ohio Tax. Its even in the top 10 for national tax keywords such as irs tax attorneys and tax lawyers. These are harder keywords to get ranked for because your competing against everyone, not just attorneys in Ohio. This site is still not 100% done and we are adding more content to the site daily.  No coincidence that the traffic over the last week has more then tripled.  I talked with the client today and he told me he got a high number of calls this week and signed up a few new clients as a result.  So already not even before the site is done, it pays off bigtime with new clients!   Plus he has a better looking site that is easier to navigate, has more content and is ranked in the top 10 for all his keywords, how is every lawyer not doing this? It works!!
